Mr.Moustache has launched Mr.Warmer, a free saturation plugin designed for adding harmonic content and tonal shaping to mixes. The plugin is intended for final mastering applications while also supporting use on individual channels.
Mr.Warmer is based on a physical model of a 12AX7 triode operating in a common-cathode stage, drawing on the Dempwolf and Zölzer DAFx-11 model. When grid conduction occurs, the model shifts its operating point, producing asymmetric saturation with even and odd harmonics that change with the signal envelope.
A second Boost stage follows the triode model. This stage rounds waveform peaks and introduces additional harmonics, using a bias that follows the incoming signal envelope.
The plugin processes audio in Mid/Side mode, using separate triode processing for the Mid and Side signals. Its Mid/Side control determines where saturation is applied: 0% applies processing to Mid only, 50% provides full stereo processing, and 100% applies processing to Side only.
A Tilt EQ section uses an SVF filter to divide the signal at 1 kHz and adjust the spectral balance by up to ±1.5 dB. As this processing takes place before saturation, the Tilt control can alter both the tonal balance and the frequency range driving the saturation stage.
- Level controls the overall signal level entering the saturator.
- Color adjusts the weighting and energy of generated harmonics, while Color Boost enables an additional saturation stage with intermodulated harmonics.
- Mix provides dry/wet blending, and In/Out controls input and output gain.
- Oversampling is available at 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x.
- Gain Unity provides automatic loudness compensation for level-matched comparisons, while Bypass is latency-compensated and click-free.
Mr.Warmer includes factory presets and supports saving and loading user presets. The interface offers Classic and Dark themes, along with resize options at 75%, 100%, and 125%.
The plugin is available in VST3 and AAX 64-bit formats, plus AU for macOS. It supports macOS 10.13 or later on Intel systems, macOS 11.0 or later on Apple Silicon, and Windows 10 version 1607 or later in 64-bit form. No iLok account or hardware is required.
